SFD Statement: SFD16 cancelled

Sheffield Fans Derby 16 was due to take place on Saturday 16th May 2020 at the New York Stadium in aid of Sheffield Hospitals Charity Jessop Wing Bereavement Appeal. The difficult decision to postpone the event was taken on 31st March 2020. This was in line with Government and health guidance with the hope that the event could take place in 2021.

The SFD usually takes place in May annually, following the conclusion of professional football. This therefore leaves us four months away from a potential event. The COVID pandemic is still at large and while we have the positivity of a vaccine starting to roll out we are still months (maybe longer) away from life returning to normality.

Due to elite football having to stage seasons back to back with a very limited break the football pitches need extended recuperation time when the current (2020-21) seasons come to a close. This means that stadia available to us to host the event are very restricted. Along with the fixture congestion currently pilling up at both non league and professional clubs that could see their seasons extended.

With all of the above in mind, the feasibility and safety of being able to stage the Sheffield Fans Derby in 2021 is against us. We have therefore taken the difficult decision to cancel the event in 2021. I am really disappointed to have to cancel the event for the second year in a row but ultimately this is down to factors outside of our control. The safety of everyone involved in the event and the practicalities of staging an event of this size are paramount.

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the squads for the event, officials, sponsors, facilities, spectators etc… we will come back bigger and better in 2022. We will continue to run smaller “events”, raffles, auctions etc… to support our charity Sheffield Hospitals Charity. They are ultimately the biggest “loser” from this situation missing out on potentially £10 to £20 thousand pounds of donations from the Sheffield Fans Derby event to the Jessop Wing Bereavement Appeal.

If you were one of the players or one of our event sponsors involved in the SFD 16 event you can either donate the player fee (£40) or amount of sponsorship which will go directly to the Jessop Wing Appeal or request a refund. Please email iain.atkins@sheffieldfansderby.co.uk by midnight on 31st January 2021 with your preference.

Players with a place within the squads from SFD 16 will get first refusal on places in the event when it is rescheduled. £335 has been raised via the events Justgiving pages – this money has already been received by the Charity and allocated to the Jessop Wing Bereavement Appeal. Once we know the amounts donated via the player and sponsorship fees we will confirm a total amount raised.

Thank you to everyone who has been and continues to be involved in the Sheffield Fans Derby, without you we couldn’t raise the fantastic amounts of money that we do for Sheffield Hospitals Charity.
